Noi heals everything. Your social status depends entirely on how rare and destructive your smoke is. If you are born with weak smoke you are trash. If you have no smoke at all you are a Cross-Eyes and you get hunted.
Hell sits underneath or beside or inside the other two, geography gets fuzzy here. Devils live there. They are ancient beings who created sorcerers as a science project. Devils wear weird masks and gamble on the outcomes of the human world. They can grant ascension, turning powerful sorcerers into devils themselves, which gives you eternal life and the ability to boss around the lower ranks. But mostly they just hang out and eat snacks while watching the chaos.
The Magic System Is Biological Grossness
Magic is not spells and wands. It is body horror. Every sorcerer has a special organ, I think they call it a devil tumor or something similar, that manufactures black smoke. This smoke gets pumped through their blood and exhaled to activate their specific curse. The smoke is not infinite. Sorcerers can run out and then they are just regular people who can get shot or stabbed like anyone else. This is why they carry weapons. Shin uses a hammer. Noi prefers her fists. Fujita has a gun because his magic is weak.
The masks matter too. Devils make these things and they amplify your power. En wears one that looks like a gas mask. Shin has a heart shaped one. The short version is that a human named Ai Coleman wanted to become a sorcerer. He fell into a puddle of sentient black goo called The Hole, which is the accumulated misery of every human ever killed by magic users. This goo possessed his dead body and created a split personality. One side is Aikawa, a normal guy who befriended Risu. The other side is Kai, a psycho who leads the Cross-Eyes.
Kai killed Risu to steal his curse magic. Curse is a type of smoke that manifests as a separate entity and hunts you down. It is unstoppable. Risus curse chased Kai, cut his head off, and tried to eat him from the inside. While this was happening, Kai swallowed a bottle of Ebisus magic, which turns people into lizards.
